27 Jan 2008 - Malaga

Our trip started with everyone not waking up until i called them, due to heavy partying Friday night. after rolling in at 4, i crawled out of bed at 7 30 to go catch a bus!
we went to the city of Malaga, which is a small port town about 2 and a half hours from Seville. 10 kids ended up going, mostly my closer friends, a few randoms. it was awesome to be in a city that wasn't inhabited at least 40% by Americans! which Seville seems to be. it's a small city, but they were having celebrations for carnaval, which is next weekend. after some drama about getting a hostel, jack was like "hey i found a place where we just pay 15 € per bed lets roll." so all of our research for cheap hotels and underhanded intentions of sneaking extra people into rooms was for naught... the place that we stayed wasn't even a hostel really, it was the upstairs of someone's house, that just had some extra rooms or whatever... it was very convenient though because we were able to leave our things there while we saw the sights!
Malaga is where Picasso was born, so they have a pretty extensive Picasso museum, which was cool, but none of his really famous works. it was kind of silly, its hard to be able to walk through a museum and feel like you're really knowing whats up with the art that you see, especially in my case, with no prior knowledge of anything about Picasso, his life, or the intentions of his style. but then we stumbled onto an archaeological site beneath the museum! i know, what? there are a lot of roman ruins, and you know, they just go and build museums on top of them these days.
we climbed approximately one hour straight up to see an old roman castle, but of course, the moment we got there was the closing time. the views of the city were very incredible though (i know you just want pictures... they'll be on the facebook soon.. i still don't have batteries for my camera, so i'm waiting for my friends to upload their pictures.)
we went to a very exciting tapas location for dinner, and made friends with the old dudes at the table next to us, who passed over their wine, and i guess just chilled. i was at the other end of the table, learning about the nightlife Malaga has to offer from some locals. as soon as we learned about the bar called "fraggle rock" we knew we couldn't have made a better choice than visit Malaga.
there were lots of people in the streets all night, and we bounced around for a bit, and finally attempted to sleep through the squeaking of the hostel bunk beds.
my room was awakened harshly and told that we had 15 minutes to get out of the hostel, so we crawled to the beach and continued to sleep, which included me laying in the sun and jeremy swimming in the Mediterranean.
the other highlight of Malaga was the alcazaba, which was built by the moors in the 700s. (i think) it was incredibly beautiful. you can look it up on wikipedia if you want.
so the trip was overall a success! thanks again to jeremy for dragging us to someplace random and having it be awesome. traveling is also a bonus, because you get to bond so much with the kids that you go with. i'm definitely falling in with my crew here, i know, i didn't want to make any friends, but i can't help it. they're pretty cool. so this was our first dirty/scrubby/unplanned/cultural/independent trip, and i'm going to go ahead and call it a success!
